Why Not Spending Money Cost Me A Fortune

25

Today I want to share a very important lesson with you. I’m going to tell you a true story so that it will save you loads of time and money.

Pay close attention!

When I bought my very first domain I didn’t want to spend the yearly $10 price. I was scared. I was even more apprehensive about getting web-hosting which was an additional $8 per month.

For months I went along, working on my online projects and spending money on only the bare essentials and nothing more because I thought I was saving…but it actually cost me a lot of time and money.

I tried to figure out shortcuts and spent hours, days and weeks coding websites myself and trying out replicas of tools and services for a fraction of the price. The result was poor quality, a huge waste of time and incredible frustration!

Having the proper tools, services and equipment can make all the difference between being Joe Average and never getting your business of the ground versus being incredibly successful.

Good tools often cost money, but not always as much as you think. Actually, I learned that the cost is pretty irrelevant as long as the tool makes a great return on investment. Even if you have to go out and spend $20 000 on tools and equipment, as long as those tools end up making you those $20 000 and more back, then it is totally worth it.

By not spending money on the proper tools and services for your business, you are withholding yourself from a lot of profit and you are wasting a lot of your precious time.

When I started this blog 2 years ago I considered the website and blog thing a hobby and nothing serious. I had no idea that I would want to do it full-time and thus was very reluctant to spend a lot of money on it.

Now that I am taking it seriously and working close to full-time on my sites and blogs, I really regret not having done things properly from the start.

What I mean is that I should have spent money on the right tools, equipment and services to be able to optimize my business, time and efforts.

I should have spent money on a proper theme, hired a designer to customize my site, bought an email auto-responder service like Aweber, purchased useful plugins like Popup Domination to increase visitor conversions, hired a virtual assistant to help me with building links etc. (These are all essential tools that I now recommend to every blogger.)

I have slowly gotten around to doing all those things (after 2 years of blogging), and together they all add up to such a substantial boost in growth and income.

Naturally my expenses are up to a couple of hundred dollars a month now, but the money is going into the business and I’m not spending it on strippers and booze.

I’m investing it into my business by making sure I have the right tools, services and equipment to ensure optimal growth.

The concept of putting money into your business before you earn it seems strange to many business owners. Many business owners like to milk their business for all of its profits without investing in proper equipment. That is a recipe for stagnant growth and slow degradation of the business for sure.

When I was working in my dad’s supermarket, we spent a small fortune on tools and equipment. We bought fridges, shelving, the best cleaning equipment, kitchen tools, bakery equipment and so on and so forth.

It took a while to make the money back that we spent on the equipment (and we didn’t get much profits in our own pocket), but during that time our business ran incredibly well as a result of the equipment we had purchased.

The best way to look at it when you spend a lot of money on tools, equipment and services to help your business grow is that you are investing the money, not spending it. The more you invest (when done smartly) the higher your return and the greater your profit will be in the future.

When you start out and you don’t have anyone with experience (i.e. a mentor) to tell you this, then it can take you a very long time for you to figure it out through trial and error. During that time it takes you to figure it out for yourself, you waste a lot of precious time and potential for enormous growth and profits.

Evertt Bogue wrote a cool article about starting and growing an online income.

Everyone has dreams of making thousands of dollars a month from the internet, but the truth is that it starts with your first sale. That can be anywhere from a dollar to a few hundred dollars, but that is how you start.

Then, once you have your first sale, you start working towards getting your next one. You keep adding and working on your things until you are making sales every single day, and eventually you make enough money to quit your day job.

The growth of your business can be much faster if you invest in the right tools, equipment, services and education.

Don’t be scared to spend money on a mentor or on coaching programs from the best people in your industry. Spend money on the right tools for the job. Hire assistants if you have to and outsource work that costs you a lot of time, time that you can rather spend on growing the business.

The only downside is that you don’t get immediate gratification. You don’t get to spend the initial money you earned on luxuries and vacations. That initial profit goes back into your business to make it grow and to (hopefully) turn it into a business that can bring you financial freedom for many years to come, possibly even for the rest of your life.

I’m not telling you how to run your business, I’m just giving you some ideas that work (from my own experience).

Would you rather spend that online income of $1000 a month on luxuries and vacations now, or would you rather invest it into your business (tools, equipment and services) and potentially grow your business into making $10 000 or $100 000 profit a month in the coming months and years? Think about it!

As an additional example I can tell you that I have a friend who started 6 months ago knowing absolutely nothing about building websites or marketing. He invested close to $10 000 in courses, mentors and training to learn how to make money online, and he is currently netting over $3k a month from his online projects already. That is how powerful having the right education, tools and services can be.

So if I were called on to a TV show and was asked to give one single piece of important advice to people who run a business, this would be it:

Take all your initial profits (except whatever minimum you need to live off) and invest it back into your business by purchasing proper tools, services and equipment to leverage and automate as much as possible. The more you automate and leverage, the more you can expand, the more you can produce and the more people you can service.

    Diggy,

Thoughtful post. I hear exactly what you’re saying. The problem for me has been finding the “right” tools that deliver exactly what I need.

Investment in tools can be great if you know what you’re going for.

    • Diggy

      Hey Moon,
How are you? Good to hear from you!!

Yeah I know what you mean, with such an information overload it can be very difficult in finding the right tools.
I’ve mentioned a couple great ones that I personally use and recommend, but there are still a few more very good ones that I need to get around to buying.

      Thanks for commenting:)

      • http://experimentsinpassiveincome.com Moon Hussain

Y’know, I commented a few times but never saw my comments on your posts. I guess they’ve always ended up under spam. Not sure why this is happening, which sucks!

Love this and very topical for me. You have to put your money where your mouth is. If you believe in your idea investing $$$ as well as time will definitely help you get where you want to be faster.

    • Diggy

      Hey Annabel,
Yeah it’s definitely the case. I’m sure you experienced it too when you made the switch to a professionally designed theme. Did you not wish you had done that right from the start too?

Proper equipment makes all the difference!
      Thanks for stopping by!

I totally agree with you, Diggy!

I was also a cheapskate (cheap hosting, cheap autoresponder) and now I regret that I spend money on it instead of spending money on high quality solutions.

I paid twice – for cheap solutions and then for high quality solutions.

I think that this is the difference between people who make real money and people who don’t make money (or make very little money) online – the first ones don’t look at price – they look at the return on investment.

It doesn’t matter what the price is as long as it helps you make more money than you spend on it.

    • Diggy

      Hey Marcin!
How are you doing Sir? Long time! Hope all is well!

I experienced the exact same thing. BY saving money and going for the cheaper option, you usually get bad quality (or lesser quality). This leaves you with poor results and a lot of frustration, and in the end you have to purchase the proper equipment and services anyway, so you might as well do it straight from the start and save yourself a lot of hassle and money.

      Thanks for commenting!

      • http://www.rentier-blog.pl Marcin

Thanks, I’m doing good but my sites aren’t. No sales and I’m starting to believe that something is wrong with me hehe.

    Hi Diggy,

This is an important lesson, especially for a fellow blogger.

Saving money often only works in the short term. We save money in the short term, but you waste our time in the long term, which is something even more valuable. I think that if you have the money, it’s a good idea to invest it.

This really got me thinking about some of the decisions I’m making. Thanks ;)

    • Diggy

      Hey Eduard!
      How you doing?

I totally agree, if you have the money to spend, spend it on education, tools and equipment for your business.
Glad to hear that I gave you something to think about. Hope everything goes well!

      • http://www.peopleskillsdecoded.com Eduard – People Skills Decoded

Well, my blog is 1 year old since yesterday, and I’m under the impression I’m reaching an important blogging threshold. So, yes, things are going well.

  • http://WWW.THELIFETHING.COM Jonny | thelifething.com

Dude, I have been there. Cannot tell how much this stuck home with me.

The annoying thing is, I still do it every so often. Painful isn’t it.

    • Diggy

      Hey Jonny!
Thanks for stopping by! How are you doing? Still traveling? Where in the world are you?

  • Dani

Hey Diggy, this isn’t only a lesson for businesses it can be applied to our lives daily- I come across this specific situation everyday knowing the rule but don’t always stick to it because at that exact moment I just want the easy way out (using less money) – but I’m working on it!

    • Diggy

      Hey Dani!
Yeah for sure it applies to everyday things too, like for example getting new tyres for your car. I’m always reluctant to spend $1000 on new tyres and would rather go for cheaper ones, but then I ask myself if something happened and I had an accident because I opted for cheaper tyres of lesser quality, would that be worth the money that I saved?

Hope your trip is good so far!

  • http://www.nomadicneill.com NomadicNeill

The thing that stops me from investing money back into what I’m doing is that it’s difficult to know what is going to be a good return on investment.

Should I have this e-book written, or is it better to do it myself and spend the money on back-links to the sales page. Or does this product not even really fit the market and should I get help researching the market.

All these things come with experience, but you could waste a lot of money if you don’t know what you are doing but want faster results.

How did you deal with this dilemma?

    • Diggy

      Hey Neil!

I get what you mean. It’s like you don’t know if it would be smart to spend money on design, SEO, advertising etc.

All I can say is that nothing in life is certain. There are no guarantees. The best you can do is ask successful people in your field what they did and what they suggest doing. Study their successes and methods, and read as much as you can before you make the decision to spend your money.

There is a chance that you spend a lot of money and effort on something that will bring no results, but more often than not, the right tools, equipment and services will help you grow faster and increase your profits.

Great advice! Sometimes it’s difficult after working so hard for so long to not “enjoy” your income rather than reinvest it back into you business. Automating throughout your business and outsourcing to experts for everything from SEO to Payment processing is an ongoing investment into the long term return from your business.

    • Diggy

      Hey Coling!

      Thanks for stopping by!

Yeah it is indeed about longer term. I know it can be frustrating and demotivating when you don’t see a proper return for months on end. You keep re-investing and re-investing and sometimes you wonder why you do it, but over the long term it should yield kickass results!

I’m planning to build my own blog site as well..but I dont have any knowledge on doing so, Everything I’m doing is a learning process and alot of trail and error…Been a couple of months now trying to figure things out, Until I finally got frustrated and contacted a local webdesigner I found a business card for. I gave him examples of what I want and he gave me a quota..of $2500..he said to design a basic Blog site would be minimum $1500 and I requested more than average..I obviously dont have that initial cash to invest to my business but I’m wondering..does it really cost that much? I live in Canada By the Way..Thanks Diggy!

    • Diggy

      Hey Jason,
Cool that you want to get into blogging too! $1500 is ridiculous, and a fat profit for the guy who is charging that. There is absolutely no reason to spend that much on a blog if you’re just getting started unless you want to go all-in (Custom design/logo, aweber, premium domain name etc)

If you have some patience and time, have a look at my free guide:
      http://www.upgradereality.com/create-your-own-blog

It’s a free and step by step tutorial, so you can go right ahead and set up your own blog from scratch. It shouldn’t take more than a few hours to do with the help of the tutorial.

If you are planning on blogging long-term then it is better to learn the technical side of things anyways, as you don’t want to be running to a designer every 2 days to make changes to your site.

I hope this helps but feel free to email me if you have more questions!

      • Jason

Nice! Thanks diggy the tutorial is amazing! Step by Step and broken down. this will be really helpfull.

Diggy – It’s all an investment; great way to look at it. Many people shy away from investing money month-over-month at the start. It’s common because we aren’t 100% convinced our ventures will pan out.

But if you’re going to invest your time and effort on projects then commit and have confidence in them. If you research the tools and needs thoroughly you’ll find the right fit for your budget.

As you improve, the tools and hosting will scale. There’s a lot to be said about the psychological triggers that get pulled (and your subsequent follow-through) when you “put some skin in the game.”

    • Diggy

      Hi Jon,
Yes that’s the biggest fear that’s holding you back from investing money into a new project, the fear of uncertainty.

I hope that this article inspired people to invest in the right tools and services for their projects because it really does make a difference in the success that you can achieve.

What is your experience with this?
