The Pursuit of Happiness

 Happiness

No this is not about the movie… although it does apply.

Is happiness something that we always chase, sometimes its so far away and totally smuthered by problems and the dark side while other times we get a taste of if ever so briefly?

Sometimes it really seems that way.
From my experience there is always one greater aspect that prevents us from being truly happy for long periods of time.

Yes we attain moments, maybe days or weeks of exceptional happiness where nothing could be better. Those are the most fantastic moments in life, and learn to enjoy and absorb every second of them when you experience it!

A new puppy, a rainbow, making a fortune, landing the job you want, achieving your goal, having found that perfect boy or girl, be on the vacation of your life with your best friends.

But there always seems to be something that puts a damper on the happiness and causes it to fade.

Girl problems, money problems, friendship problems or health problems. Usually the problems come from one or more of these areas.

I’ve been thinking and maybe its due to modern society, maybe even because of our material possesions and needs, because there are others that have more than us and we idolise their life and therefore slave away ours whilst being deeply unhappy.

What if you truly had nothing, if you lived in a house in the mountains, grew your own vegetables and food, and were able to survive, had the girl of your dreams and your best friends all living amongst you…wouldnt that be true permanent happiness?

Why is there this constant need to improve, and move forward, and be better than someone else, why do we want a ferrari, or a mansion, or have 50 million in the bank?
Its the same with cars, why are there new models coming out every year? Why are there new fashions and trends every season?

Sure I can tell you the usual answer, people want to be unique, have something others don’t (again here why do we need to be better than others?), producers need to offer a new look and more features in order for the public to switch from their perfectly fine car to a new one.

Maybe it has something to do with our nature, survival of the fittest, where in a herd it was neccessary to not always follow it, to be faster and stronger than the others because the weak and dumb will die first.

If you do a search in google, it is absolutely shocking how many people are angry, depressed, unhappy and want to kill themselves.
There are entire forums of people, all seperate from each other but writing the exact same thing, how their life has no purpose, how nothing matters, how they wish they would die to relieve them from the monotomy of their simple existances.

The trick is finding your passion, something that you love doing so much that you would pay people to do it, you would do it in your sleep and after you die.

Of course this is easier said than done, even I am not sure of what I really want to do.

I really love writing which is weird because I hate English in school, it lets me feel so great, as I put all my thought on paper, slowly watch it turn into a story.
Of course there are many things I enjoy doing, I love speaking french, I love martial arts, gym and running, this entire site contains all the content I really love doing.

So I don’t have a plan at the moment, Im free and seeing where life takes me.

For me the only thing that is a burden is money, and not even that I want a lot of it. Its kind of weird.
I love life, I love myself, my friends, my family, I love working and being busy..all I really have is a fear of somehow not being able to make enough money to survive.

Wow…pretty interesting, Before I started writing this article I didnt know, know I do.

Its like Brad Pitt says in Fight Club (haha yes I love that movie!) :

“It is only once you lose everything…that you are truly free to do anything”

Maybe happiness is a state of mind, maybe it is purely scientific and has to do with the hormone regulation in your blood.

I havent really had any experience with Buddism, but their definition of suffering is trying to control the uncontrollable.

We have no control over other people, over the weather, over gravity, over time or death.

As soon as we realise that and stop trying to control those things, we can experience a sense of freedom and happiness we do not usually feel.
Do our best up to the limits of the possibilities in our control and for the rest let it be.

Combined with doing what you love…that may just be the secret to permanent true happiness.
