The point of life – My version

What is the point of life?
Have you ever found yourself asking this question?

I know I’ve spent the last year thinking about it, and the answer is simple: there is no point to life.

We are all born with a certain amount of time on this earth, and when that time is up the ride is over.
This is not a bad thing at all, I think in fact that it is very good to realise this fact.

Personal development bloggers often write about being true to yourself and following your heart and dreams and passion. I think the main reason behind this is that you only have one life and it’s yours to live.Depending on certain circumstances (what family and part of the world you are born into), you can pretty much do anything with your life. You can dedicate it to helping others, fighting crime, pursuing incredible wealth or knowledge, mastering a craft or a sport, making music, the list is literally endless. If all this is possible, why do so many people then get sucked into a lifestyle of doing something just because their parents or friends or social conditioning tells them to live their life that way?

Currently I’m still working on another post of my very own Bucket list, listing 100 things I want to do before I die, inspired by the movie ‘The Bucket List’. It will still take me a few days to complete and likely certain things will get added or removed over time, but I want to have a list of things I really want to do, and I find the only way to do everything is to write it down and tackle it one item at a time.

A quote I found a few weeks ago goes like this:

“Not only will you die, but the sun will eventually burn out, thus destroying any legacy that you left behind, and any “point” that there was to your life whatsoever. “ (Credit to Tyler from RSD)

I actually posted that quote on my Facebook and someone commented that it is kind of negative.
I disagree. I think it is an amazing quote. To me, it says that there is no point in doing something for someone else. If you want to be an actor because you want to be remembered, or you want to make lots of money so that people will remember you after you pass, and spend your life doing things for the sole purpose of being remembered after you die, then these are the wrong reasons for doing something in my opinion. Why would you spend your life, the one valuable thing we have, trying to achieve something that will eventually be eroded anyway?

Do things because they are what you want to do, because they are what you love to do.

I know some people will disagree with me and not share my opinion about life, and that is perfectly okay :)
I just decided for myself that I want to live life the way I want to, to do the things that make me happy and to follow my heart, because when the end comes, you’ll be wishing of all the things you didn’t do, or the time you wasted pleasing others while you really didn’t want to.

One of the reasons for this post is that some people I know are very close to the end of their lives.
My grandfather is 89 years old, and after a long and successful life of hard work, lots of love and good health, his health is deteriorating. He suffered a stroke a few weeks ago and has recovered to the point that he is able to think and speak perfectly, but no longer able to walk and can hardly see. I hope for him he still has a few years of good quality healthy life left.

Also, one of the people that used to work for our family suffered an epilliptical fit and doctors suspect he will pass away soon or have severe brain damage. This led me to think: this man has worked really hard his whole life for an average wage, never really achieved anything big, but had food, shelter and a good place to work. If this man dies, who will care or remember him except a few close friends? Was he really happy? Did he do everything he wanted to do in his life?

Compare that to Michael Jackson, who passed away and is mourned and remembered by millions of people.

I guess what I’m trying to say is that over time you will not be remembered anyway, it is good to let go of the fear of living a life without achieving massive fame and the fear of being forgotten once you pass.

You have one life, it’s yours to live and nobody elses, so live it.

Try your hardest not to do things that you will regret (which can mean doing something but also not doing something).

Have a Rockin’ day

  1. Wonderful post, Diggy! This really reminds us to seize the day and make sure we are doing things we want to do and living our lives to the fullest. Life is short and its so easy to forget that so thanks for the great reminder and for sharing your point of view!

    Hey Dani:)
Always good to hear from you!
    Glad you enjoyed the post:)

  3. The first step to realize you can do everything in you life is to be independent with yourself. When you realize that, you can *choose* to do something.

Regarding the list of 100 things, Indiana Jones built a similar list when he was 16. I read it in a book but I don’t remember which one, maybe it was unlimited power.

  4. Hi Diggy, I think that your quote about the sun burning out is a relevant one. When looked at logically, the purpose of life always seem to come back to finding fulfillment out of it, one way or another. If you value your life, then you must try to make the most out of it that you can. After all, if you were given a million dollars, would you be content with just wasting it? No, but your life is worth far more than a million dollars!

    Hey Diggy!
Really like this and amazing quote. I like to try and think like this – it’s not negative – it’s facing facts and by doing that we can cherish each moment and make the most of life. Good to have a reminder.
    Jen :-)

      Jen!! :)

Yay! Glad you share my view too!
Sometimes we need a little reminder to keep us focused and on the right track:)

      Have an awesome day!

  6. Diggy, I love that quote. The point of your life is for YOU to LIVE it. Nothing else. We waste it and THAT is sad. I don’t think your quote is negative at all. People who see it as negative are people who are missing out on their own life and instead are living someone else’s.

  7. Thanks for this. The fear that what we do won’t have an impact, I think, comes from our need to always have something to “show for” what we do. But if we can actually enjoy the moment to moment process of writing our book, or whatever it is we’re doing, we end up obsessing less over whether the product will be good or famous enough.

      Hello Chris!
Welcome, good to see you hear!

Thats a good point, enjoyment makes us forget about the ego and our fears of failure and not being enough.

It would be good to make it a habit to enjoy life and everything you do as much as possilbe!

Keep well and hope to see you next time!

  8. What you say reminds me of a Land Rover advert that we had/have here in the UK. “One life, Live it”.

Ever since that advert came out it has been used for so much more than “just” selling Land Rovers. It’s become a catchphrase.

Well now for me it’s become a way of life. So Diggy I guess you have just captured the epitome of One Life Live It.

    Have a great day.

  9. Diggy, I have to agree with this philosophy. I see a great many people spending a lot of time trying to find a point or meaning to life. Most of the time they aren’t enjoying the process. It’s kind of frustrating searching for something that isn’t there. :)

However, I also know people that strongly believe that they have a certain purpose and it inspires them each day. I think that is a wonderful thing.

I think the point is this: Think whatever you want about life–as long as you enjoy it. If you’re not having a great time, trying something else.

    Best!
    -Craig

      Heya Craig!
Thank you so much for stopping by:)

I agree, everyone should have something to do, a mission or a purpose. But just because your purpose that makes you happy may be simple or different to other people’s it does not mean that it is wrong:)

      Keep well!

All I can really say is “touche my friend, touche.”

It’s easy to go through life doing something because you think somebody else will be impressed or it’ll look good down the line, but in reality, the only think we have is our immediate happiness. You could be remembered and mourned by millions, but if YOU aren’t enjoying YOUR life, then does it really matter?

We’ve only got 1 round on this Earth.. may as well make it count :)

      Heya Travis!

      Thanks for stopping by!:)

Some people may indeed chase the fame and money, the millions of people to mourn them when they are gone…but it’s all temporary.

Only do it if that is what makes you happy, follow your heart:)

  13. Eddy says:

I have to admit, this is all true. I find myself after thinking on this what am I doing….Everything I do I really do just to try and impress others, when in reality I really just need to live my life, worry not of others as long as I’m not hurting them and learn as much as I can.
