Okay, so this morning I turn on the news, and they’re talking about a swine flu outbreak that started in Mexico and has already showed up in Canada, USA, UK and Australia.

Now, the reported cases are minimal, and deaths are still around 80 people, but they are already comparing this to a pandemic of 1918, where 50 million people got killed by a similar kind of virus.

Also in 1968 1 million people died from the hong Kong flu.

I don’t know if this will be just like SARS, which never turned into a pandemic and was relatively mild, or if it will turn into a full scale 1918 pandemic killing millions of people.

I have watched enough zombie movie about virus outbreaks to have an idea what will happen and what to do if it gets serious.
Firstly I’ll keep monitoring the news to see how it spreads.

I did some basic research on the virus, and it is some strain of the influenza A disease.
It is a respiratory disease and is much worse for healthy people aged 20-45ish since their immune systems are stronger, and because of that the body sens lots of anti-bodies to the infected areas (lungs), which in the case of this disease make its effect much worse.

So far I could not find anything about the kind of virus, there seems to be a vaccine in the US but stockpiles are not nearly enough for the entire population, and there is a chance those vaccines will be useless if the virus mutates its form.

Then the question is, how is the virus spread, airborne? (really bad), or through contact like normal flu viruses?

Anyway, if it starts getting bad, firstly, id not travel on a plane at all. Avoiding contacct with people will be good. I’ll stock up on tinned food for at least 6-12 months supply and water too, because in the movies the stupid thing people do is keep wondering around. Now i doubt people will turn into zombies, but the virus can only survive for so long. After time it will either die out, we will cure it, or it will kill all its hosts. Bad…I know. Hope it never gets this far and that it is just a scare.

All you need is food, water and a warm place to sleep, so if you have all that for a few months to a year, then you can just lock yourself up, stay away from people and sit it out until the storm has passed.

I just like to have a plan:)

   The swine flu statistics out of Mexico are alarming but I don’t believe that it will turn into a pandemic here in the United States. We are fortunate here to have an excellent health care system and enough Tamiflu to control the spread of the infection.
