Kill Your TV

37

The times we live in today are so completely 100% different to when my parents grew up, and indescribably different to the times that my grandparents grew up in.

We have cellphones, video consoles, home cinemas, computers with high-speed internet, shopping malls, cars that go from 0-100km/h in under 3 seconds, gps systems the size of your palm and the list can go on and on.

My parents witnessed the first color TV. Actually they grew up as little kids without TV. They played with friends outside in the streets and in the snow.

When I was young I spent quite a bit of time playing video games, but I still spent a healthy amount of time outside in the ‘real world’. If you look at the young generation of today you can see them spending hours and hours watching TV, playing video games and texting on their cell-phones.

It’s ridiculous if you ask me, but that is what modern society has shaped our young ones to be.

Technological advance is unstoppable. With so many people in the world, everything is going to get better, smarter, (smaller where electronics are concerned) and cheaper. There is even the possibility to watch hundreds of TV channels on your computer!

This is not necessarily a bad thing. I’m all for the progress we have made in the medical field for instance. It’s amazing how doctors can help people who have had accidents or serious trauma.

The key word is ‘moderation’. Just like with everything in life, you need a healthy balance. The two ‘evils’ of modern society that I want to address in this post are the television and the computer.

Average Hours Spent Watching TV

According to the A.C. Nielsen Co., the average American watches more than 4 hours of TV each day (or 28 hours/week, or 2 months of nonstop TV-watching per year). In a 65-year life, that person will have spent 9 years glued to the tube. – Source

Average Time Spent Online

Teenagers spend an average of 31 hours a week online and nearly two hours a week looking at pornography, according to a study. – Source

Time Spent Online

I’m not going to pretend that I am the perfect example of having a healthy balance when it comes to TV and computer. I hardly ever watch TV (as in like less than an hour a month) but I sometimes spend more than 10 hours a day on the computer. This is mostly because I really want to build up a passive income from websites and blogs, and I put most of my free time into that. However, I am fully aware that I spend at least 2 hours or more of that time doing very unproductive things (like Facebook and playing Starcraft 2).

I still try to keep a balance when I can. I like to go to gym, to eat healthy, to spend time with friends and to read books and play piano or guitar.

There are definitely a few positive effects from TV such as education you gain from watching documentaries or getting ideas from certain movies and shows.

There are also positive effects from spending time online, especially when you research, learn or build something up (like websites or blogs).

However, the sad reality is that TV and the Internet mostly have a negative effect on the majority of people. It robs you from your creativity, it makes you lazy and unwilling to exercise, it makes you eat unhealthy, it makes you sleep less and it can also make you very anti-social.

There are some more serious consequences from sitting behind a computer all day like:

  • Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI) that you get from clicking all the time
  • It’s really bad for your eyes because you focus on the screen without moving around and you blink much less which dries out your eyes.
  • Bad posture
  • Often it causes you to eat junk food and more than necessary

Even if you do need to spend time behind the computer for your work, take a 5 minute break every 30 minutes. Stand up and move around a bit, close your eyes and move your eyeballs in circles and relax them a bit. This will definitely help our health!

Evolution Man Into Computer

Here’s How To Turn Your Life Into Awesome
(I.E. Your Mission For Today)

Let’s say theoretically that your life is perfectly the way you want it. You have enough money, a beautiful house and a gorgeous girlfriend/boyfriend. Even if you could sit on your butt for 10 hours a day and watch TV, is that really what you would do with your time?

Make a little estimation for yourself of how much time you spend watching TV and in front of the computer every day / week. Don’t be surprised if this is more than 2 hours a day.

Now think about what you would like to achieve. Don’t tell me you don’t have goals. Everyone has goals and dreams.

Maybe you want financial freedom, maybe you want a better-looking body, maybe you want to learn to cook.

Kill Your TV!

Whatever your personal goals are, why not halve your time spent watching TV and being in front of the computer and use that time to work on achieving your goals? Try it for a month and see how much you can get done!

So true about the older times. Even, when I was a kid (I am 28 now), there were no mobile phones and now I can see no one without a mobile phone. The point with technological advances (or curse!) is that it is really hard to go back. Once we are used to having something sophisticated it is hard to revert. The same with TV. If people find it entertaining and more comfortable to sit on the couch in front of the TV they won’t go outdoor.

Thanks for the inspiring article, I spend about 5 hours a week in front of the TV. Most of it is watching news and documentary.

    • Diggy

      Hey Jane,
I agree, it can be hard to revert. But once you realize how much of your life you are wasting then you may want to do something else besides watch 4 hours of TV per day.

“In a 65-year life, that person will have spent 9 years glued to the tube” – That sounds crazy scary to me!

It’s good that you watch documentaries, and even an hour a day is not bad. TV can be very relaxing sometimes, and as long as it’s done in moderation I’m not against it.

      Thanks for stopping by!

The other day someone asked me what I do in the evenings since I don’t have a tv, I felt like a bit of a holier-than-thou asshole when I listed all the things I do, oh well… they asked.

But I’m the same in that I still spend a lot of time online doing things that add little or no value to my life. Today I’m going to start cutting that down.

    • Diggy

      Hey Neil!
Awesome that you’re doing your own thing without so much TV and computer.
If I could I would love to just sell my computer and live without it, real life is much more fun!

Let me know how you are able to manage your cutting down of time online:) (I think it’ll be hard, for me at least it is)

  • http:/hanshageman.com Hans Hageman

I need to break this addiction not only for myself but for my children! I tell myself I’m not too bad but those extra two hours a day of focused attention would really help me out.

    • Diggy

      Hey Hans,
      How are you doing?

It’s good that you want to change. Don’t cut it out completely, rather try bring those two hours per day back to one hour a day:)
That should work pretty easy for you.

  • http://santipauli.wordpress.com Santi

True. Glad you mention the hours wasted online, because all of us are guilty in that matter. Sadly most of us who are in front of the computer screen for hours are doing the same those who watch a lot of TV do.

    • Diggy

      Hey Santi!

Yeah I have the same, I hardly ever watch TV but spend many hours a day online, and I know for a fact that I waste a lot of time online also. It’s so easy to procrastinate or do other things just because I don’t feel like getting started on my work.

      Thanks for stopping by!

I killed the TV in our house 6 years ago.

Wanted to fill my head with positive uplifting messages instead of the negative ones that TV gives you.

Even my favorite shows, like CSI, though enjoyable to watch, fill me up with bad vibes.

Now I fill my head with good stuff by choosing motivational messages on youtube and other venues.

My 9 year old son doesn’t remember ever having a TV. He’s so smart and advanced – I can’t help but think having no TV might have contributed to that.

    • Diggy

      Hey Maria!
Long time miss, how are you doing?

You’re smart, TV is not the greatest. I just really enjoy watching movies, but I do that on my computer anyways, so TV is pretty much unnecessary for me. Even though I didn’t read a lot when I was younger, I think that reading lots of books (especially interesting ones about things like EFT, meditation, the mind, spirituality etc) is awesome for a kid’s development.

      I hope you’re well!
      Thanks for stopping by!

I didn’t killed my TV, it died a year ago by itself. It left me just like that, without saying good buy :(

This was a sign for me that we simply aren’t meant to be :)

I never bought a new one! And now I don’t even notice it’s not there :)

  • http://www.healthmoneysuccess.com Vincent

I killed my TV a few years back then. However, I did the same mistake of being online for hours. It seems like I got to work on this.

    • Diggy

      Hey Vincent!
Yeah man, it’s been a switch from TV to computer. I still think that being online has a slight advantage over watching TV, because you are still actively doing stuff when you are on your computer instead of lazing on the couch and being a total zombie.

      Thanks for stopping by!

  • http://www.thesaleslion.com Marcus Sheridan, The Sales Lion

Diggy, first time visiting your site and I found this article to be a great read. Just thinking about a person spending an entire decade in front of the tube makes me want to vomit….yikes.

Like you mentioned here, I too am grateful for technology and all the good that comes with it. But at the same rate, for a sad majority it kills time, creativity, relationships, and future success.

How many other inventions have not occurred because the next Edison was too busy watching re-runs of Lost?? Alas….

Keep up the good work mate :-)

    • Diggy

      Hey Marcus!

Thanks for the kind words and welcome to Upgrade Reality:) Happy to have you here!

I watch a lot of movies and I especially like the apocalypse kind, where the world as we know it gets destroyed and people go back to bartering and farming.

It actually terrifies me to imagine that our entire society could cease to exist, that there would be no more law and order, and that we would have to provide our own food. I definitely have the survival mindset, but I have no idea how to grow food or hunt animals to be able to feed myself, let alone my family.

Thanks for stopping by and hope to see you around more often! :)

  • http://thompsonland.tk Bryan Thompson

While I haven’t killed my TV set, I find I’m not nearly as interested in it as I used to be. Of course, the same can’t be said of my laptop. :-/

    • Diggy

      Hey Bryan!
Yeah, it seems to be a common problem, computer has replaced TV :P

  • http://www.theskooloflife.com Srinivas Rao

    Diggy,

I think your evoultion diagram is very telling. One of my oldest friends worked at Oracle for many years and he said exactly what your diagram displays “we spend 2000 years learning to stand upright and now we sit in front of a damn computer all day.” I’m not going to lie and tell you I’ve killed my TV. In fact I bought a brand new 52 inch flat screen. But I don’t have cable, and I use it to watch movies and play games. That being said, I get an insane amount of work done because I don’t just sit around and channel surf. Solid ideas in this post.

    • Diggy

      Hey Srini!
Long time bro, how you doing?

Yeah that diagram is funny but it’s the truth. I spend up to 10 hours a day in front of the computer, and I know I should spent much less and still be able to do the same amount of work.

I agree, TV is awesome for watching movies. I was thinking about getting a 50inch plasma, but I’m going to go for an HD projector with screen instead. Home cinema is awesome (a couple of my friends have them).

      Thanks for stopping by! :)

  • http://www.alexdumitru.com Alex Dumitru

I never watch TV and I didn’t even have a TV until my girlfriend moved with me :)

    • Diggy

      Yo Alex!
      Thanks for stopping by!
Watching TV with your girlfriend is awesome to do, not because of the TV but because of the gf:)

  • http://www.edenjournal.com Eric | Eden Journal

Wow, I’m surprised at the number of people who have killed their TV. We killed our cable a long time ago, but kept the TV for movies and games.

We did a no TV week a long time ago, and from that we realized how useless most of the programming was. That encouraged us to cancel our cable. It was kind of a detox that made us realize what waste of time it was to watch mediocre programming on TV.

    • Diggy

      Hey Eric!
      How are you Sir?

Yeah, when you get bored and channel-surf then you will see how much junk there actually is on TV. Especially if you watch MTV, the shows on there are just ridiculous. 16 and pregnant, super sweet 16. The only thing I like is MTV cribs, that’s awesome:)

      Thanks for stopping by!

I probably watch too much TV – it does annoy me bit. While travelling, I do is it as a bit of a comfort to remind me of home if I’m having a bad day.

    Hey Diggy,

I can relate to this post so much.. it’s horrible how much the internet (the new tv addiction imo) has been a gift from the devil to kill our precious time.. something that can never be given back.

    we gotta be strong ;-)

    • Diggy

      Hey Parker!

Yeah, I guess it’s just a matter of deciding you want to make the most of life and do something constructive:)

My hubby and sis are happy TV addicts but I’ve always found it to be a huge distraction from my writing so, creatively- or so I’d like to think, I’ve situated a stand up fan between my desk and the tele. I can hear what’s going on, even catch glimpses if I’m interested enough but unless it’s worth pulling me away from my stories I’m not going to get into it.

The computer on the other hand…

I’ve broken the chain between myself and desktop, unfortunately it’s call the hand held and I still manage to check my email every hour on the hour. A work in progress, lol.

Great article, I’m really loving your blog.

    • Diggy

      Heya Feeby!

      Thanks for the awesome comment!
Yeah email-checking is a nasty addiction. I have the same. Even though I KNOW there is no point in checking email 10 times a day, I still do it. One of the biggest time-wasting activities I can think of.

Happy to hear you like my blog, hope to see you around more often!
      Have a cool cool day!

  • http://www.itsalongwaytothetop.com/ Vince

It’s nice to know that there are other people out there that don’t use/watch TV. I got rid of my TV back in college. Haven’t look back since.

If I want to watch a show, I use Hulu or the like or just go to a friends house.

I can’t tell you how productive you become when you don’t have a TV (But you probably already know that)

  • http://www.jungleoflife.com/ Lance

    Diggy,
While we have a tv – it is something I watch very infrequently (perhaps an hour a month). I used to watch much more. And since I’ve cut back in the last couple of years especially – I DO feel just that much more productive (and really – energized too).

    Good stuff!

  • http://karate-kids.com.au SenseiMattKlein

Amen Diggy! I use the TV for one thing–play DVD’s in which I’m trying to learn something new, that’s it. What I hate most about TV are the ads, that try to make you feel inadequate if you are not buying their products. The vast majority of them are an insult to our intelligence. Have accomplished much more since I gave up the idiot box.

    • Diggy

      Heya Matt!
Honored to hear from you again :)

I agree, regular TV has more ads than shows. I love watching movies and series on TV, but these days HD projectors are pretty sweet too!

      Have a super weekend!

  • Darby

Got rid of the tele years ago and didn’t get a cell phone until 2006. I am thinking about giving that up. People who know me, know how to get a hold of me.

There is an entire world out there and I don’t think it was meant to be Netflixing. I find now when I do watch the television (friend’s house or what have you) especially during commmercials, I start to twitch and get nervous.

Serious. Quite scary, so I look away. Viva la life!
