There Is No Such Thing As Failure (Video)

I spent a good 8 hours creating this inspirational video about the topic ‘failure’.

If you choose not to accept failure, it does not exist. Enjoy!

If you cannot view the Youtube video you can watch it on Vimeo.

My Rolemodels

There are 4 incredibly successful people who I really look up to as rolemodels for inspiration and motivation:

  • Michael Jordan
  • Lance Armstrong
  • Jay Z
  • Will Smith

I decided to create a video using quotes about ‘failure’ from my rolemodels. The reason for this is that so many of us (myself included) are in the early stages of our journey to success. Sometimes it feels like we really suck. It feels like we cannot do anything right and we mess up over and over again. This can be very demotivating and can even lead to us discarding our goals and stop working on them alltogether. Often we quit when we are so close to achieveing success. Right about that time where you feel like you cannot do it anymore is the time when you are just about to make a big break-through.

These 4 amazing people are incredibly successful and have probably ‘failed’ more times than you and I together, which is exactly the reason they are so successful. The only difference is their mindset. When they ‘fail’ at something, they learn from it and only become more determined to become successful at it. What doesn’t kill you only makes you stronger.

Michael Jordan

My favorite quote about failure is by Michael Jordan. You have probably heard me say it a few times, but it resonates with me so much that I just like to repeat it whenever I have the chance:

“I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.”

Thank You

I hope you enjoyed my video project. I am very excited about the idea of creating videos. In my head I can see awesome footage and how I would want it to come across, but in reality, making a video is a lot harder that it seems. It takes hours of work and can be frustrating. However, I really enjoyed making this video and happily spent the hours to make it. One day I wil be the next Steven Spielberg!

Great video! Will Smith is definitely one of my role models. I try to apply that treadmill theory to everything that’s important to me. Thanks for the inspiration!

      Heya Liz!
Thanks for stopping by, glad that you liked the video!

I wouldn’t even call it failure; they just kept learning.
That’s even better: Substitute failing with learning. It’s the same. Try everything you can and move forward, commit as many mistakes possible, but make every mistake only once.

Time to fail your ass off .=)

Hi Diggy!!! :D How are you right now?

I enjoyed very much the video!!! It can change a mindset! I know that making a video really takes a lot of effort and patience because I had already done one. But one other good thing is that when you are editing the same pictures and sounds all the time you’re fixing on you this good moments, insights, wisdom .

I liked to re-read “If we get on a treadmill together one of two things will happen: you’re getting of first or I’m gonna die” . I think it is the most strong statement about persistence!

    ps- Yes, I have a blog! :)

      Hey Tania!

I’m doing goooood! How are you doing?
You made a video too? Let me see!

Yeah, Will Smith’s quote is indeed very powerful. Just never ever give up and let someone beat you, that is the mindset that will get people to move mountains and live on Mars :)

    Hi Diggy,

I love this video! You brought Will Smith to my attention through your previous video in your article and I totally admire and respect his work ethnics. He is someone.

Thanks for the great video that you had put up and congrats on passing the 1000 rss subscribers mark!

    Cheers,
    Vincent

That is an awesome video, thanks for brightening up my day. There’s nothing wrong with having high standards and I’d like to think that part of those 8 hours was figuring out which quotes to use and other pictures to stitch it all together.

There is something to be said for how people deal with adversity. For example, Jay Z had one of his albums come out on Sept. 11, 2001, which will be a day that I’ll never forget as long as I live.

    • Diggy

      Hey JB!

You’re welcome, thank you for leaving a comment!! Always appreciated! Indeed, the entire process was fun and worth it, and next time I think it will be a little easier. To create something worthwhile always takes a little more effort and energy than usual but in the end it’s worth it!

    That hit the sweet spot.

I love how the right words from the right heroes can echo in your mind when you need it most.

I can never forget the scene in Dodgeball where Lance talks about quitting:
… “Well, I guess if a person never quit when the going got tough, they wouldn’t have anything to regret for the rest of their life. But good luck to you Peter. I’m sure this decision won’t haunt you forever. ”

Clever boy, it was lovely. I tell my kids the Michael Jordan quotes often because they love basketball. Imagine what a world it would be if we’d been indoctrinated as kids to believe that failing doesn’t matter but not trying does:) Cheers, bro!

    • Diggy

      Hey Annabel!

Ooh nice, I only discovered the quote a few years ago, nobody ever told it to me when I was little. Parents should tell their kids that kind of stuff from when they are little, I know I will :)

    Hey Diggy,

I enjoyed the video (and the background music!)

Will Smith is a huge inspiration for me as well. Whether people agree with his choice of movies (or music career!) I really admire his vision, drive and work ethic.

    Hi Diggy,

You’re greatly appreciated for putting in the time to create a video. It’s been recommended to me, but I’m taking it one step at a time and learning other elements first. Meanwhile, I’m happy to admire your work :) With practice, I’m sure it will become easier.

The quote, “Don’t let failure go to your heart and don’t let success go to your head,” resonated with me. I’ve coached lots of people who let failure go to their heart and it will be a beautiful reference.

    Cheers!

    • Diggy

      Heya Kim!

You’re welcome! It’s a lot of work but it’s fun to do, and as long as you have that attitude you can do anything you want. If you need some tips before getting started feel free to get in touch :)

That quote is actually one that Will Smith’s grandmother passed on to him. I really like it to because it is so easy to get arrogant when things go well and so easy to lose faith when things don’t go well. Thanks for stopping by!

Good stuff Diggy. I was just thinking that the byproduct of all my failures is the areas that I’ve succeeded in. This just reinforces that message :)

    Awesome video diggy!
My favourite is the lance armstrong one, although I’m a big will smith fan.

      Thanks Alex!
I really admire all 4 of these guys, they are truly remarkable!

Great video, Diggy, and I agree — well worth the effort! This is something I’ve thought about a lot and funny because I’ve had a few conversations in the past week about whether failure really exists.

That Michael Jordan quote has been pushed around quite a bit, but it doesn’t seem to sink in all the way for most people, and I admit — myself included. I guess we’ll just have to hear it one million and one times. :)

    • Diggy

      Hey Valerie!
      Thanks! Long time miss :)

      Hope you are doing well!

  • http://theboldlife.com Tess The Bold Life

    Hi Diggy,
Congrats on the video. It is worthwhile because visual people thrive on these.

However I agree these people you mention have succeeded in their careers but I don’t see Jordan as a totally successful person. He is a womanizer that hangs out in Vegas.

I think Lance is a successful cyclist but I think he gave up his kids and first wife for his excessive need for trophies.

But hey great video and congrats on sticking with it until finished.

    • Diggy

      Hey Tess!
Glad you liked it, thanks for stopping by!

Oh, I never mentioned that they were perfect. Everyone has their flaws. However, these 4 people have achieved what very few people have in terms of success, determination and overcoming failure and they are a big inspiration to me :)

  • Sanford

Very cool video! And nice music!

It’s great to get that kind of inspiration/motivation.

Thank you for taking the time.

Nice work Diggy. I enjoyed watching the video. the post was inspiring.

  • Constantin

It’s strange that I’ve seen all these quotes before, but they continue to have an impact.

The Will Smith quotes for me were the strongest. It’s so simple. It really has very little to do with natural talent. Success is simply doing what you love and never stopping. The interesting part is that until this really clicks or resonates with you, these are just cliche words on a page–after that they become priceless.

Indeed, making movies has been one of the most time consuming experiences for me also. But, if you use the proper tools (eg. iMovie on Mac) then the work tends to be slightly easier.
Plus, if you add things like narration, it takes even longer :)

Did you spend time really thinking the movie through before starting the work? Maybe prepare a storyboard first?
Small things that tend to become very helpful once you start the actual production.

    • Diggy

      Hey Alexandru!

I did indeed plot it all out on paper before I started making the video. I think that it took me a little longer than usual because this is the first time that I made a video like this and there were some trial and error processes that I needed to go through. Hopefully the next one will be a bit quicker.
