How To Be (un)Productive

Being unproductive is the one thing we are naturally good at. Stalling, procrastinating, coming up with excuses why you should not get to work. “I just wanna check my email for 5 minutes, I swear”, and before you know it an hour has passed. Watching Youtube videos, reading your favorite blogs, sitting on Facebook. It is so easy to become distracted on the internet.

Even in real life, Televisions (and DVD players) are one of the biggest contributors to unproductivity (if there is such a word). Especially TV series, I know how addictive they can be. Once you start a good show, you have to keep watching it, and often there are 3 or more seasons, which cause you to watch for hours and days on end. And that promise to get to work as soon as we are done with the movie, that is just to clear the guilt that we have of knowing we should be working instead of lazing.

Its easier to be unproductive but at the end of the day it feels better being productive. It takes a little more effort to sit down and get in the productive mode, but once your work is done, it feels rewarding, and hopefully is.

For the first week in Amsterdam, I have been super unproductive. I went out every single night, came back between 2am and 4am and only woke up sometimes as late as 2pm. I managed to do two blog posts and that was pretty much it. I spent hours watching Prison Break right from the beginning (it’s an awesome show by the way, I’m almost done with season 2 now) and ate a lot of junk food like fries, chocolates, burgers and crisps.

It was fun to do for that week, and I don’t regret it. However, after a week it starts feeling dirty and unnatural. It doesn’t feel good going out to clubs and bars every night, getting home so late and sleeping through most of your day. Getting nothing done during the day and eating unhealthy doesn’t feel very good either.

Life is not about being a workaholic, not at all. It is nice to take vacation, do nothing and be lazy or do some hobbies. I just know how hard it can be to get yourself to sit down and work, especially when you work for yourself and not for a boss. There is all the freedom to do nothing if you want, but there is also the responsibility to get things done, build up the business and make money.

Let’s take UpgradeReality as an example. The aim is to build it up to a great, helpful resource about self improvement with a couple thousand readers and high rankings in search engines. If I procrastinate and watch TV instead of working on my blog or writing blog posts, I am not magically going to get more readers or better rankings. However (if I take things day by day or week by week and keep writing posts and guest posts on other blogs), over time UpgradeReality will grow towards the goals I set for it.

How To Be Productive:

The key to being productive is to resist the temptation of procrastinating and just getting to work. Once you sit down and start working and get in that mode, then being creative and productive comes pretty easily. The fact of knowing that things are not going to happen by themselves, combined with the ambition to get somewhere, make money and achieve things, are a good motivator to focus, sit down and start working.

I find that getting things done and working on something actually feels good. Sometimes writing a blog post for me seems like a big chore, and I beat around the bush, but once I sit down and start writing then I really enjoy the process and the end result.

Laziness of often justified by “I dont care”.
“I dont care if i get fat.”
“I don’t care if I dont make that much money.”
“I don’t care if I don’t have a date for friday nights.”

The truth is that deep down you really do care.

Another helpful secret to working consistenly is finding some sort of routine. If you work for youself you have the luxury of choosing your own routine. Personally I am most productive early in the morning when I wake up. For the rest of my time here in Amsterdam I choose to wake up, work for 2-3 hours and then taking the rest of the day to enjoy and have fun. It can turn out that I work 6 hours or more, but only if I want to or feel that I need to. I want a minimum of 2 hours a day dedicated to my projects.

Maybe you are more productive at night. In that case it is wise to set up your routine for those hours. If you are really dedicated and focused, then you can be more productive in 2-3 hours than most people can in a 8-10 hour shift. This is great because you get more done AND you have more time to play.

The Secret To Being Productive:

  • Resist the temptation of procrastinating.
  • Motivate yourself with the goal of achieving something.
  • Sit down and get to work.
  • Focus and dedicated your attention to your work for a few hours.
  • Rinse, wash and repeat.

The best productivity tip that I learnt was to do just 3 things every day. Each night I pick just 3 of the most important tasks that need to be done and do those. I usually end up doing more but by figuring out just 3 really important things I actually achieve a lot in day

      Hey Anthony!
That is indeed a good one. I think Tim Ferris mentions that in his book the 4 hour WW :)

    Hmm… interesting, Diggy.

See, I’m coming at “unproductive” from a whole different angle. I totally agree with you that partying all the time, and sleeping through your days is a yucky, useless way to live (after a while… everyone should try it, though!).

But being UNproductive in general is something most Costa Ricans, and enlightened Buddhists, aspire to. So many people devote their whole lives to getting to a place of NOT doing, NOT striving, NOT trying, NOT planning… and just BEING.

Is it unproductive to just BE?

For some reason, it’s a skill that seems to come naturally to most Costa Ricans, and many Europeans (I recall a daily four hour siesta in Madrid!).

I’m not sure there’s anything necessarily wrong with being unproductive, as long as you aren’t throwing your life away.

    Whatchathink? :)

PS: Are you feeling better? Heard you’ve been under the weather.

Being unproductive is of course in relation to what you are trying to achieve.

In Diggy’s case it is NOT working on a blog he wants to grow.

In the case of people trying to be, there are still procrastinations in life, trust me.

The concept of being isn’t easy it all.*
It requires focus just as any other task. Focus (for me) does not mean _a lot_ of brain work, it just means that you choose to use the brain work in the way you want to, according to your goals.

      Example:
If I wanted to become a TV series expert, would it be unproductive to watch series every day?
Of course not, BUT it would still require me to really focus on the task in another way than I would usually when watching an episode.

I would also say that you are only being productive if it actually has a purpose. Doing loads of stuff just because isn’t productiveness in my eyes.

      My 2 cents,
      Jonas

      * I am mostly from my own experiences after reading The Power of Now.

PS. @Diggy, any hot chicks down there?

      • http://www.questforbalance.com Lisis

Jonas, I like your point, that even watching TV *could* be a productive activity, if it is getting you closer to your goal.

Unproductive, then, is anything that is making you stray from your goals, whether those have to do with website marketing or achieving enlightenment. At any point we are closer to, or further from, our intended path.

        Nice!

      • Diggy – UpgradeReality.com

        Hey Jonas!
Thanks for the comment buddy! :)

I totally agree that being productive is only the case if you have a purpose! You could work like a dog digging holes in your garden, but without a purpose that work will just be retarted and not productive.

Yeah there are plenty of hot girls in Amsterdam, just have to go to the bigger clubs at night. During the day they’re all out walking in shopping centers and busy streets. You should definitely make a turn in Amsterdam one day, you’d love it! :)

        Jonas,

I couldn’t agree with you any more. I’m a 1st year medical student and every time I’m learning about something new, it seems more of a chore than when I learned about it during my own leisure time. Why? Because I’m now required to think about what I’m learning in a different perspective. It’s all about the f-word: focus :D

      Hey Lisis!

I think there is indeed a difference between being productive and just being. But to get to the state of just being, you need to have some sort of stability. You either need a good job, a passive online income or money in the bank. If you do not have those, and your goal is to get those, then wasting time on things like TV and Facebook are in my books considered being unproductive.

If you have the resources to just be, then it is awesome spending all day on the beach, going surfing, rockclimbing, making exotic food dishes.

I think that is what you were trying to say in your comment? Yeah I’m feeling a little better thanks! The change of hemispheres threw me off a little :)
      Have an awesome day!!

Been there, done that. The amount of time I spent growing up in front of the idiot box was shocking. If I’d used that TV time and focused it on study, I’d have six PhDs by now.

Thankfully, in last couple of years I’ve broken the TV addiction, mainly due to Chinese TV just being utterly crap! I owe censorship and terrible story lines a big thank you.

Setting goals, and imagining them in my mind is a great way for me to battle my unproductive self. Like this morning I would really love to watch tv for a few hours, but I’m 4-5 months from my goal of quitting my job, and there’s a lot of work to be done! Nice post, Diggy, hope you have a good day man.

  • http://www.fearlessendeavors.com/ Nate

TV can be a huge life sucker and productivity sucker. That’s why so many people can’t get out of their unproductive ways…they almost become trapped.

Example: someone might not be happy with their job, but they don’t know what to do. Well, it takes work and there’s no better time to start than today. However, people still need to work, so when they get home, instead of doing anything, they sit in front of the tv and have a few beers and then go to bed. The key is breaking these bad habits and getting into the right mindset. Don’t see it as ‘work’ per se. See it as an investment to get where you want to be.

    Diggy,

Interesting take on productivity. For me, the most “unproductive” thing I do is probably go and spend half my time surfing. But, the irony of it is, I come up with all my ideas for my blog posts while I’m in the water. So I think that allowing yourself moments of unproductivity is actually healthy.

Killer post mate. I know how you feel with the Prison Break thing.. I watched the entire show in like a month ;)

I think it’s important not to resist temptations but rather accept them. This doesn’t mean to always mess around, it just means to know that they will always be there.

Glad you’re sharing your honest lessons..

Sounds like you are living it up in Amsterdam! haha great! I’m so happy for you. You deserve a break.

In terms of productivity….it’s a fine line because like Lisa mentioned above there is definitely a cross over when it comes to “being” and “doing.” You feel fantastic when you get things done, but that’s a very American, workaholic mentality. I’ve battled back and worth with this during my travels because you want to enjoy where you are, get things done, feel like you are progressing, learning and all that jazz. I think it’s important to find a balance between the two. I’m still working on it! haha enjoy your travels and keep in touch :D

    • Diggy – UpgradeReality.com

      Hey Amber!
Haha, yeah thanks, I’m having a great time so far :)
Hmm, I think it indeed depends on the mentality that you grow up with. But imagine you had $10 million in the bank and did not need to work another day of your life for money. Would you spend your days partying and lazing about? I am not in that situation, but it seems to me like an unfullfilling lifestyle. It is nice to be busy with something, even if they are your own projects.

      Thanks for stopping by!
Enjoy your travels too miss! :)

I watched every single episode of Prison Break and loved it. Talking about unproductively, I suppose as creatures of habits we can easily fall into the trap of occupying ourselves with nothing.. Which is doing everything but nothing productive by the end of the day.

What has helped me is not just building a routine but also writing down things I need to do the following day . I generally get at least 95% of it done and that keeps me happy. Great tips you have provided and it sounds like you hand had an Awesome time in Amsterdam … Merry Xmas :) and a Happy New year in advance.

I don’t want to be in that lazy state because it is fake.

Unproductive. It’s a situation in which it’s not very hard to get ourselves in. It’s easy to relax a little bit more, and to loose our focus, and so.. we become, unproductive! But I guess, that the conscience has a role, and one day we wake up and we start thinking. Or that’s what we should do…

    • Diggy – UpgradeReality.com

      Hey Helen!

I have been taking advantage of ultradian rhythms for couple weeks now, and that has really supercharged my productivity. The idea of this is to focus on one important task for about an hour, take a small break, focus for another hour and then take a longer 30 minute break.

Apparently our level of alertness is fluctuating many times over a day. With this technique it’s possible to use the moments of high alertness to focus on important things, and then relax during the breaks by doing something completely different from focused state of mind – e.g. taking a nap, doing some exercise etc.

I’ve also found that being aware of ultradian rhythms helps me notice when my body needs a break. And I know that after the break I will feel more alert again and can continue working on my important task :)
.-= Sami Paju´s last blog ..Finding your hidden talents =-.

    • Diggy – UpgradeReality.com

      Hey Sami!

I haven’t heard of those rhythms yet, will google it!
I have heard of this too, using short bursts of focus and productivity. I have also heard of training in this way. Instead of running masssive distances, atheletes would do a repeated number of 100m sprints, and it turns out that their overall fitness becomes just as good if not better that athletes traiining by running many miles at a time.
