How much is something worth? |
That depends on its perceived value.
10 cents could be too much and ten million could not be enough. It all depends on the amount of value that something has to you.

Certain items could be worth millions to some, for example, an abstract art piece by some unknown artist.
That same piece of art is worth 10 dollars to someone who doesn’t appreciate it..
Let’s take another example:
Getting paid for being punched in the face. How much would it cost?
That depends on the value money has for someone. A millionaire would not do it for 1000$ while a homeless person may do it for 10$. It’s like that with everything in life, there is always someone willing to do the same job for less money. Of course at a point, a fair price is a fair price, but that is what makes the whole rat race so difficult, because the same item, job or person is worth more to some people than to others, and those people who want it the most will fight the hardest for it.
Take a simple one litre bottle of Evian water.
If I told you that you will trade everything you own for that bottle of water…would you believe me?
Most probably not, you think I’m crazy!
But let’s paint a picture of the conditions you are in:
You are kidnapped, tied to a chair in a dark, smelly basement, rats running around. You have no idea where you are or what the intentions of your kidnappers are. You hear a man walking in the dark, and BOOM, all of a sudden there is a huge bright light shining in your face. After a while, he turns the light down, and he is sitting behind a table. The table is big and made of solid oak wood, designed by a skilled craftsman. On the table, perfectly centered, is a bottle of Evian water, unopened.
The man looks you dead in the eyes, and says to you in a strong decisive voice…”You are going to give me everything you have, and trade it for this bottle of water”.
Still thinking ” Ya right!” ?
The man gets up and walks out, and for the next 24 hours you hear or see nothing, only the bottle of water on the table in front of you, which you can’t get to because you are tied to the chair.
You can see where this is going, because you can still say no, but after ANOTHER 24 hours, you WILL give everything you own for that bottle of water, simply because now it has much more value than anything else you own, because it will keep you alive.
In today’s world, a lot of things are decided by a free market, meaning governed by supply and demand. Food, petrol, toilet paper, things which are relatively cheap to produce and in huge demand are at a fair price, while more exclusive things like art, antiques and craftmanship are more expensive because of the difficulty to obtain it elsewhere.
So what is something worth?
The answer is: whatever value it has to you.
