My goal was to build an online income of $5000 per month over a period of 13 months and I think it’s only fair to all of you that I reveal how my year has gone, what I’ve achieved and how close I’ve come to the goals I set for myself.

Business Achievements of 2011

In hindsight, I didn’t have a clue what I was doing with my online business 13 months ago. I had no real plan or strategy to follow and I pretty much wasted the first 8 of those 13 months on totally pointless activities.

While I worked hard, put in many hours and was constantly putting myself out there, I was going about it the wrong way. I wasn’t working on anything that could bring in the kind of money that I wanted to make.

I created and launched 3 of my own products: How to blog HQ, CLoudblogginghq (with my buddy Glen) and the Confidence Black book.

Each of those products took me 2 months to create, and only Cloudblogginghq was a real success, mostly because of Glen’s blog audience. The other two products I created barely covered the cost of making them, not even counting the time I put in.

But these are the things I did wrong, and although I could have done much more with the time I had if I knew what I know now, I had to go through the process of making these mistakes to be able to know what I know now.

So what have I achieved in 2011?

In terms of income, I’ve averaged around $1500 per month for the year. Not quite enough for me to live off and far from my $5000 per month goal, but it’s a step in the right direction.

I built and sold various niche sites throughout the year which earned me a couple of thousand dollars, but more importantly, it taught me a lot about building niche sites. I’m pretty sure I’ve figured out a profitable method for building niche sites without having to work on them myself (outsourcing a lot of the work) and I’m currently building some new niche sites based on this method. I’ll be able to tell within the next 4 months if it indeed works out as well as I expect it to, and then each site should bring in at least a few hundred dollars per month on total autopilot.

As for this blog, UpgradeReality, I’ve written a few dozen quality articles throughout the year. Upgrade Reality has gained close to 5000 new subscribed readers. The amount of people visiting UpgradeReality on a daily basis has risen to about 3000 hits per day (triple what it was in the beginning of the year) and Upgradereality.com has received over 500,000 views in the last 12 months.

In the background I’ve also been trading the forex markets and building up my trading account. Forex trading is a big passion of mine (you may have noticed the occasional posts about online forex trading) and I’ve recently decided to overhaul my old forex blog so that I can seriously start building it up in 2012.

Goals for 2012

Currently my personal life and freedom is not quite as I’d like to have it due to my lack of significant income.

Since I’m talking on a personal level here, I might as well be open about my thoughts and feelings. I’ve recently turned 25 years old and in many ways I no longer feel like a boy but a man. The time when a boy becomes a man cannot be determined by a mere number in age. Some boys become men at a very young age and some boys just never seem to become men, even when they’re in their thirties or forties.

A real man is many things. He needs to totally believe in himself, have his own boundaries and his own goals. A real man is kind and compassionate but hard, stern and aggressive when he needs to be. He does not blame others for what goes wrong in his own life and he takes responsibility for himself and the ones he cares about. A real man provides, protects and gives but is also not afraid to ask for help when he needs it.

All these qualities of a real man I’ve listed above (and the many more I haven’t listed) take time and experience to obtain. I feel that I’m well on my way but I still have much to learn. I also feel that in order for me to really become a man, I need to achieve my goals of financial freedom, build up my own business and conquer any and all obstacles in my way.

As a result, my sole focus and only goal for 2012 is to create enough of an income so I can have the freedom to live how I want, where I want, with the girl that I love.

So… I need a plan because if you fail to plan, you plan to fail.

My plan for 2012 to take my financial freedom is the following:

1- Upgradereality

I’ve spent the last 2,5 years building UpgradeReality up to the personal development resource it is today. It is bringing in some money every month but not as much as I think it could and this is likely due to me not offering enough quality solutions for the readers’ problems that they’re willing to pay for.

I’m planning to write many more articles to increase both the daily traffic and subscribed readers.

I’m also collaborating with 3 incredibly talented people on a personal development guide that will surpass all personal development guides and I plan to offer this guide to the readers and visitors of UpgradeReality, planning to turn it into the main source of income for this blog.

The reason why I love working on UpgradeReality so much is not so much for the money but for the satisfaction of making a difference to the lives of others. I get dozens of emails from readers thanking me for my articles and motivation and although I may not be getting a huge amount of money for the time I put in, life’s not all about making money for personal gains. I believe in karma, and the more you give, the more you get back.

2- Forexhabits & Trading

Other than the topic of personal development, a big passion of mine is online forex trading (as you may have read when I published my 3-part tutorial about it).

I am currently trading for myself part time with a small ($1000) account and I hope to build that up to an account size of a few thousand dollars in 2012.

Due to the fact that forex trading is such a passion of mine, I am not only interested in trading for myself. I want to share my knowledge and experience of forex trading with as many other people as possible and help them become more profitable traders. Thus, I’m going to build my blog ForexHabits into a complete online forex trading resource in the same way that I’ve built UpgradeReality as a personal development resource.

Since the online forex trading niche is one where participants are much more likely to spend money on information (due to the nature of the niche, i.e. working with money), owning a popular resource in this niche can be rather profitable.

Niche Sites

As I mentioned earlier, I’ve set up a good dozen niche sites throughout the year that made money through promoting affiliate products. I also sold all of these sites and the reason for that is because the sites took way too much of my time.

Building a niche site and writing dozens of articles about a topic that you’re not passionate about is rather time-consuming, although it can be done in a few days of hardcore work. However, driving traffic to the site once it’s finished or building enough backlinks to the site to get a top ranking in Google is almost impossible if not a stupid allocation of time and energy.

All the time I put into building these sites and learning about SEO was not a complete waste of time. In fact, I’ve learned a huge amount from it and I think that I’ve figured out a really energy-efficient way to create profitable niche sites by outsourcing most of the work (including article writing and SEO).

I’m in the process of creating 5 new niche sites through this new strategy I’ve planned out and I’ll be able to tell within the next 4 months if this goes according to plan. It will however require that I invest about $2000 upfront so there is a bit of a risk involved for me.

If it turns out that my strategy works, then it’s only a matter of spending enough money to build dozens of niche sites and I’ll likely go out and get a loan to do this. If the strategy fails and it’s not as profitable as I expect it to be, at worst I’ll lose a couple of hundred dollars because I can always sell those niche sites for close to cost price.

I just can’t help but notice that most people never really get anywhere in life. Although many people have dreams and desires of success, of living a life that would make them truly happy, that is all those people will ever have. Dreams and desires.

And on the flipside, why are some people successful with everything they do? It’s like they have superhuman powers.

Is it possible to learn how to be successful? Can you take actions and adopt habits that ensure success with everything that you do, or is being successful something that’s reserved for a select few through DNA?

Some people seem to have it all; great relationships, love, friendship, money and success in every venture they go into. So what makes these people different?

This post is very much open to discussion because I’m only going to present my personal opinion and the opinions of others that have made an impact on me about this subject.

Success Secret #1 – Your Childhood

I personally believe that your childhood and early experiences play a huge role in whether you will be successful in your life or not.

The mere process of your birth could even be the deciding factor of what kind of a person you’ll become. I can’t think of any specific examples, but I remember reading about a person who succeeded despite all odds against him. He was born 1 month before he was due and was in critical condition. Doctors were afraid he wouldn’t make it, but he did. He fought and he survived. And for the rest of his life, he fought through all struggles and succeeded.

Whether this is true or not isn’t important. I can believe that something like your birth (even though you don’t remember it at all) can greatly influence the strength of your will and character for the rest of your life.

After your birth you are subject to all sorts of external influences, your parents being the biggest influence in your younger years.

Were you given everything you wanted or did you have to work for it? Were you told that you’ll never be anything or were you encouraged to always follow your dreams and believe in yourself?

You may be wondering why I brought up the topic of your childhood. While it may play a very big part in whether you are successful or not, you have zero control over your childhood, and you’re unable to change it.

The reason why I brought up the topic is simple. Even though you cannot change the past or your childhood, by understanding how you grew up and by reflecting on your early experiences, you may be able to make the necessary changes in your life so that you will be more successful.

For example, if you were always passive and got what you wanted without really having to work for it, the reason why you’re not successful now may simply be because you don’t work hard enough and you give up when you don’t get what you want.

You have no control over the past, but you have the power to change your future through the actions you take from today onwards.

Success Secret #2 – Believe In Yourself

I’ve noticed that successful people have an unwavering belief in themselves.

To others this belief may seem like foolish stubbornness but I think that belief in oneself is a crucial ingredient in the recipe of success.

You have to know with every fiber of your body that you’re going to be successful. It doesn’t matter how long it takes, how many times you have to try or how many times you fail. With 100% belief that you’re going to be successful, it’s just a matter of time and persistence before you achieve the success that you know you’re going to get.

Life has a tendency to throw some big and bad obstacles our way which can easily cause us to lose faith in pretty much everything we believe in. I say it’s okay to lose faith in many things, but never lose faith in yourself. Always keep believing in yourself and in the fact that you’ll get what you focus your mind on. When you have this mindset, as I mentioned earlier, it’s just a matter of time before you achieve the success you know you’re going to get.

That brings me to success factor number 3: persistence.

Success Secret #3 – Never Give Up

Most (if not all) successful people have faced more obstacles and failure then you can even imagine.

Did you know that the man who started Coca Cola, the now multi billion dollar company, had 17 failed business ideas to his name? He failed 17 times with different business ideas before he succeeded, but he kept believing in himself and he never gave up.

Take any professional athlete. How many countless hours, days, weeks and months of training do you think they’ve put in before they’re able to perform the way they do?

If you want to be successful, you have to have unlimited persistence.

You have to see failure as a learning experience that allows you to move closer to success rather than proof of your incompetency.

You may need to change your approach or method you’re using to obtain success, but you should never give up on your end goal of success.

Will Smith has a great attitude towards achieving success and never giving up. Here’s one of my favorite quotes by him:

“The only thing that I see that is distinctly different about me is that I’m not afraid to DIE on a treadmill. You might have more talent than me, you might be smarter than me, but if we get on a treadmill together, there are two things:
1- You’re getting off first OR 2- I’m gonna DIE. It’s really that simple”

Success Secret #4 – Visualize Your Goals Daily

The older I become and the more I learn about life, the more I realize that you’re able to attract things into your life.

Yes, I’m talking about what people call ‘The Law of Attraction’. I won’t start talking about all sorts of magic methods or secret hanky-panky formulas that allow you to get the life you desire by merely thinking about it. Not at all.

I’ve noticed that the thoughts you think and send out and the way in which you interact with others allows you to see opportunities that will bring you closer to your goals and desires in life.

I’ve read and heard stories from successful people who had the image of their success in their minds for years before they achieved it. They knew exactly what they wanted and how they were going to get it, it was just a matter of time and hard work before they got it.

Some people even attribute their success to meditating daily and focusing all their energy on visualizing their goals every day for 10 or 15 minutes. They would sit in a quiet place free of distractions and imagine their success (whether that be a Ferarri and big mansion or the woman of their dreams).

This is not just some theory that I’ve come up with, it’s actually been proven in a book by Napoleon Hill, called Think and Grow Rich (Free download). This book is a study of the mindsets, attitudes and methods of 500 incredibly successful people and how they got to where they are.

Visualizing your goals on a daily basis is another crucial ingredient in the recipe of success. I’d recommend putting up pictures or posters of the goals you wish to achieve. Put these pictures in a place where you’ll see them when you wake up in the morning and before you go to bed at night.

Success Secret #5 – Live Below Your Means

In order to make progress towards your success you’ll often need to make sacrifices.

I’m not talking about sacrificing a goat or some other crazy ritual, I’m talking about sacrificing your immediate desires of instant results.

I know you want results NOW. You want your trophies, your money, your house, your partner, your friends. And you’d like to have it all right now.

But you can’t have it now, because you have to earn it first.

If you try to have your results before you earn them, you’re going to put yourself in such a position that it’s almost impossible for you to be successful.

For example, let’s say you want to enjoy the lifestyle of a millionaire but you don’t yet have the means to do so. You decide to ignore the principle of delayed gratification (sacrificing immediate short term pleasure for long term pleasure) and you take out loans with as many bank accounts as possible.

You buy the car you’ve always wanted, you buy the apartment of your dreams and you buy every possible gadget you want. You’re living the lifestyle of a millionaire, but at the cost of being so in debt that it’s almost impossible to pay it off and make enough money to be a real millionaire so you can enjoy what you have.

Warren Buffet, one of the world’s wealthiest men, built a fortune from scratch by always living below his means. He always spent far less than he had or earned, and this allowed him to save money that he could invest in his ideas. This (and luck or unique intelligence) helped him become as successful as he is today.

Don’t spend what you don’t have. In fact, spend less than what you have and then you’ll be able to save enough to invest into business ideas that will eventually allow you to really have the success you desire.

Success Secret #6 – Constructive Criticism

Another thing that I’ve noticed about successful people is that they’re very critical of themselves.

They constantly analyze their own methods, progress, actions etc. to see if there’s room for improvement. Successful people are always open to the opinions of others (they listen to the opinions of others but only follow these opinions if they agree with them).

It’s important that I add the fact that although successful people are very critical of themselves and their actions, this criticism is constructive criticism.

Successful people are critical of themselves and their actions to be able to improve. This means that any criticism is backed up with facts and room for improvement. Successful people don’t tear themselves down or fill themselves with negativity.

In order to be successful you must be critical of yourself, your actions and the actions of others, but you must be constructively critical. Don’t be negative, hateful or destructive. Only be critical to be able to improve.

Success Secret #7 – Manage Your Work, Don’t Do It

You’ll hardly ever hear of successful people who do the grunt work in their business.

It’s true that most successful people started out doing all the small things and physical labor in their business, and they can do pretty much every task in their business. However, successful people know that the way to be successful is to take a management position towards their work and have other people do all the small and time-consuming things.

If you are the head of your business, then your ideas and creativity is the most valuable thing. Be critical of your entire work-chain, jump in where you have to in order to make things run smoothly, but overall, take a management position. Oversee everything and make sure that everything is as it needs to be without spending your valuable time and energy on small tasks.

For example, I could spend hours building links to my blog to get better rankings in search engines (which will result in more visitors to my site), or I could pay someone to do it for me and spend my time writing quality articles (which is what will result in people subscribing to my site and which will allow me to build a relationship with them and eventually make more profit).

Where you can, spend your time doing what you do best and outsource the rest.

There are many reasons why an online business is the ideal way to make money from home. Allow me to list them below:

1- An online business allows you to work without a boss or employees. If you do need a helping hand, it’s very easy to outsource various tasks to one of the thousands of freelancers looking for odd jobs online.

2- An online business allows you to work from anywhere with a computer and internet access. This means you can work at any hour you choose, whether it be midday or midnight, a normal Monday or on Christmas day.

3- An online business can be automated and leveraged. This means that once you set up your online business and your sales funnels, the money will come in with virtually no hard work. And once you’re at this level, you can very easily increase your income just by getting more leads into your sales funnel.

2- Depending on your online business model, you may be very dependent on certain factors and if those factors disappear your whole business could shut down. For example if your business relies on Google rankings for your leads, your business could be severely crippled should those rankings disappear.

The most important aspects of your own online business are:

1- The Niche

You need to target a niche where the people want or need to buy items or services. If you choose a niche where people only like window-shopping or want freebies, your business is doomed to fail from the start.

An example of a niche where people spend would be hobby niches. Anyone with a hobby like surfing, woodworking or building car models is constantly going to spend money on that hobby and thus you’ll be able to make money recommending products related to the hobby or niche your business is about.

An example of a niche where people are likely to only want freebies or ‘look around’ is something like tattoos. I know this because I personally built many sites around tattoos and tattoo designs that were getting thousands of visitors per day but I just couldn’t get them to buy. I did sell the odd tattoo design membership, but the conversion rates were terrible.

Any niche where people prefer to look around or get freebies is going to doom your business to failure before you even start, so be very sure to do your research before you begin.

2- Enough Knowledge Or Ideas To Create Content

It’s crucial to your online business success that you produce content that will teach or entertain people. This means that you need to know enough about your niche to create dozens if not hundreds of articles over the space of a few years.

You need to come across as an expert and authority in your niche. This will greatly help you to earn the trust of your visitors and readers and get them to convert into subscribers or buyers of your recommendations.

3- Knowing How You’re Going To Make Money

Before you start building your online business, you need to know how you’re going to make money with it. Step 1 of choosing the correct niche plays a big role in how you’re going to make money from your online business.

You also need to have an idea of the kinds of products available in your niche. Are you going to be an affiliate for any of these products? Or are you going to create your own products and sell them to your visitors?

An online business does not necessarily need to be a blog like Upgradereality.com is. You could create a website that is an e-store, selling many different things online. Forex is short for foreign exchange. Thus, forex trading is the buying and selling of different currencies to take advantage of the fluctuations in exchange rates between those different currencies.

There are dozens of currencies from countries all over the world like the U.S. dollar, the Euro, the Japanese Yen, the Chinese Yuan etc. Each of these currencies has a conversion value in another currency, for example 1 Euro is worth 1.30 U.S. Dollars.

However, this conversion value fluctuates all the time depending on various factors ranging from economic output of the country to political actions to global events like natural disasters, wars or disease.

As a forex trader you research and analyze various currencies to determine a profitable price level to buy and sell, aiming to take advantage of these conversion value fluctuations. Going back to the example of 1 Euro being equal to 1.30 U.S. Dollars, if you were to buy Euro’s at this price and the conversion value goes up to 1 Euro being equal to 1.40 U.S. Dollars, then you make money.

So far so good?

Okay, so now you may be wondering how on earth you could analyze currencies and determine profitable price levels to buy and sell? Especially if you have no knowledge, qualifications or experience with economics or forex.

Don’t worry. You don’t need to have any knowledge, qualifications or experience with economics or forex to become a profitable forex trader. All you need is an open mind and the desire to learn.

Thousands of forex traders all around the world (myself included) trade the forex markets based on a principle called Technical Analysis. Technical analysis is the term given to the study of the price action of markets, in this case the forex markets.

I mentioned the constant fluctuations of currencies earlier. These fluctuations get recorded by the split second, every single day of the year. As a forex trader you have access to all the data of the fluctuations of currencies, going back as far as 30 years ago.

Through your forex trading software, you’re able to pull this data up into various types of charts of all time-frames. For example, you’re able to take the data and put it into a chart that’s updated by the minute, or a chart that’s updated by the hour, day, week or even month.

Technical analysis is based on rules, indicators and patterns that have high probability outcomes, meaning that when a certain setup appears on your chart, it’s very likely (70%+ of the time) that the value of a currency will move in a certain direction (up or down).

In other words, you don’t need to be able to predict the future to make money from home trading forex, all you need to do is be able to recognize high-probability patterns and setups and buy or sell based on that. If on top of that you only risk 5% of your trading account on a single trade, there’s no doubt that you’ll be able to make great money from home as a forex trader.

Pros Of Forex Trading

I personally love forex trading as a way how to make money from home and here are the reasons why:

1- Just like with an online business, forex trading allows you to work without a boss or employees. You make all your own decisions and you do all your own analysis.

2- Forex trading allows you to work from anywhere with a computer and internet access. This means you can work at any hour you choose, whether it be midday or midnight, a normal Monday or on Christmas day. The forex markets are only open 5 days per week which allows you to have a normal weekend without stress or needing to work.

3- Forex trading is based on a system. It’s about patterns, rules and setups. This means that there is no luck involved and that you can follow a system that will get you results time after time. No guessing and no trial-and-error.

4- With forex trading you have unlimited earning potential. Unlike a job that pays a fixed monthly salary, when you make money from home as a forex trader you are in control of your own paycheck, depending on how well you trade and how much time you put in. This allows the potential of building your trading account up to tens of thousands of dollars within a matter of months.

5- It’s challenging and fun. Personally I love the challenge of trying to profit from the forex markets and using my brain to earn my money.

Cons Of Forex Trading

There are unfortunately a few downsides if you want to make money from home trading forex.

1- Your money is always at risk. You will have losing trades and sometimes you’ll have periods where you only lose money. This is not a problem if you have strict rules about how much money you risk per trade, but the emotional aspect of losing money is not something that everyone can handle.

2- As I said above, losing money is not a problem if you have strict rules of how much you risk per trade (I suggest no more than 5% of your account per trade). However, this means that you need to be very disciplined to stick to those risk rules at all times, otherwise you’ll end up losing a lot of money and you won’t be a profitable forex trader over the long run.

1- Just like with forex trading, online poker requires strict discipline and money management in order to be profitable over the long run. You need to set limits for yourself and stick to those limits religiously. You need to play well within your bankroll and risk only a small percentage of that bankroll per session or per day that you play. If you don’t have this discipline, you’re going to end up losing money.

2- Losing money goes hand-in-hand with online poker. It’s inevitable that you will lose money while playing, and this can have a big effect on you mentally and emotionally. Losing money can make you so angry that you forget about your rules and start playing bigger to get back what you lost, and then you lose much more (this is called tilting). If you’re not capable of dealing with the swings of winning and losing money regularly, online poker is not for you.

3- If you have an addictive personality or you think that you can become addicted to something easily, online poker is not for you. There are many sad stories about people becoming addicted to poker and gambling and they end up losing everything they have.

However, if you’re the kind of person who can detach yourself from your emotions and if you’re disciplined, then online poker may be a fantastic way how to make money from home.

1- Trend Following

One of the most valuable trading strategies is trend following, which means that you identify a market that’s moving in one direction and follow that direction for as long as possible.

This is one of the easiest ways to trade as long as you always trade with a stop loss. Following the herd can be profitable but just don’t follow the herd off a cliff.

2- Don’t trade for the sake of trading

Forex trading is a game of strategy and patience. If you find yourself sitting in front of your computer every day looking at the forex markets but you don’t get a trade setup that you’re happy with, you may be tempted to just start trading for the sake of trading.

This can be a very costly mistake because you’ll enter markets at levels you normally wouldn’t. Don’t trade for the sake of trading, trade only when a setup occurs that matches your trading plan or strategy.

3- Not every hint is a good hint.

It’s good to listen to what other traders are talking about or what they are interested in but never blindly follow someone’s recommendation. Always do your own research and verify for yourself that what they are saying is in fact something of merit and that you could profit from.

Take responsibility for your own trades, don’t think that you can just blame someone else because they recommended a trade that lost you money.

4- Be A Contrarian

Sometimes it can really pay off to not follow the herd and take a contrary position against the markets. As I mentioned earlier, the herd has the direction right for a long time, but at some point in time, the herd always falls off the cliff. If you can identify when the herd is about to go off the cliff, you can position yourself in such a way that you profit from the herd going off the cliff.

5- Trade High-Liquidity Markets

It serves your best interests to trade markets with high liquidity (meaning many participants at all times) so that you can be assured of regular fluctuations and regular price executions. If you trade in markets with low liquidity you can experience irregular spikes or price movements that could hit your stop-loss and then continue in a direction that would have given you profit were you not stopped out.

6- Always Use A Stop-Loss

A stop-loss is an automatic order that limits the risk you have on a certain position. This allows you to determine the risk of every trade you make (I recommend risking no more than 5% of your account balance) and it will protect you from market fluctuations that are beyond your control (news items or global events like terrorism). Without a stop loss you’re very likely to go broke, sooner rather than later.

7- Emotions Are Enemies

As a trader you cannot make decisions based on emotions. You need to have fixed trading rules, a trading strategy and the discipline to stick to that strategy at all times.

If you allow fear or greed to be a deciding factor in the trades you make, you’re going to end up losing money if not end up being a losing trader overall.

8- Learn, Practice, and Trade

Nobody is born a profitable forex trader. It’s something that takes time and experience to become.

As a forex trader, make sure that you’ve read multiple books about the markets, technical analysis and the theory of trading. Always keep an open mind and be willing to learn from everybody who has sound advice.

You can only learn a certain amount from books, so you need to get practical experience trading the forex markets. You don’t even need to deposit real money for this, you can simply open a forex account with virtual money and learn how to trade before trading with your own money.

9- Have A Trading Plan

If you fail to plan, you plan to fail. This is especially true with the forex markets. You need to have a plan of exactly when you will trade, how often you will trade and where you take profits and losses.

Without a trading plan you’re unlikely to ever be a profitable forex trader. Trading without a plan is quite simply gambling, and gambling is based on luck, and when luck runs out… well, you know what happens.

Always have a trading plan and stick to it religiously.
