5 Ways to Energize your Life

What does that spell???
ENERGY!!!

Do you have enough of it? Does the day seem long and tiring, and you are just wishing you could be fast asleep right now? Many of us have adopted some bad habits through our lives that have a huge impact on our energy levels. Luckily, there are a few small, simple and free things that we can do to boost or energy permanently and spice up our zest for life, because when you have lots of energy, nothing seems to difficult to do.

1 – At the start of your day drink half a litre of water

During the night when you sleep, your body works at full speed to filter the blood, process any toxins and to get back into full health. This dehydrates you and when you wake up, half a litre of chilled water kickstarts your body and energizes you like crazy. Try this for a week every morning, you’ll be amazed on the effect of this method.

2- Cut out Caffeine and Junk Food

Not completely, but reduce your consumption of caffeine and junk food. In fact, take 5 days without any consumption of these, and see what a difference it makes to your energy. Caffeine and the sugar from junk food always gives that initial boost or ‘energy high’, only to have your energy levels drop to below where they were before you had the boost. This is because all the sugar causes an excess of insulin, which creates the energy, but is toxic to the body, so the body has to work overtime to remove the insulin, which is the slouch and drop of energy you feel when the effect wears off.

3- Do a Lemon Juice Fast, the Master Cleanse

Our bodies are like a well-oiled machine, like your car engine. It needs a service every 20000 km or else it packs up and stops working. Our bodies also need a service and clean-out from time to time. Actually at least once a year.

There is a technique to do this, and it’s called the Master Cleanse, which involves you fasting on a home-made lemon-juice diet for 7 days, eating no solid food and drinking only water and this lemon-juice, together with a few supplements to ensure optimum cleansing.(Lemon juice is made from freshly squeezed lemon juice, water and maple syrup)

The idea behind it is the following:
Our intestines are responsible for absorbing nutrients and vitamins from food after it has been broken down in the stomach, and expelling the excess waste. Over the years, the intestine’s ability to absorb nutrients decreases, because it becomes dirty, blocked, and lined with waste. This can be a massive energy drain.
With the Master Cleanse, first you get rid of solid foodstuff still in your body. Then you start removing all the waste that is hindering your nutrient absorption.

Some questions you may have are if you will get hungry or how you can go for 7 days without food, or if you will have no energy from not eating.

I did the cleanse myself last year, and I didn’t get hungry at all. The lemon-juice keeps you totally satisfied and you have no hunger cravings at all. People can go for three weeks without food so 7 days is very doable.
For the energy part, you actually have MORE energy while on the cleanse. Did you know that 30% of your energy is dedicated to digesting your food? So, no food to digest, means 30% more energy for your body!

You don’t need to do the full seven days, start with one or two days. Most people do this and like it so much that they want to continue for the full seven days.I’ve only covered the basic principle of the Master Cleanse, for a full instructional and informative guide I suggest the following books:

4-Wake up and Dance to your Favourite Song

Kick-start your day by putting on your favourite song and dancing to it. You get your body moving, your heart pumping and a smile on your face. Nobody is watching, so go a little crazy, do a handstand if you want.
This will only take 4 minutes of your day and put you in a good mood for the rest of it! Try it!

5-Get Enough Sleep and Wake up at the Same Time Each Day.

Getting enough sleep is crucial to having energy during the day. After applying the concept of drinking water at the start of each day, and even the Master Cleanse, you will find that can do with less sleep than you did before. It is also important to have a regular sleep pattern, waking up at the same time each day, whether it be 8am or 1 pm, that you body gets used to this cycle. Choose a time when you are happy to wake up, and make it a habit to wake up at that time every day.

Have a wonderfully cool weekend! :)

Have a Rockin’ day

Nice Diggy, I definitely agree with the water one. I try to get in one or two pints when I wake up and it always helps me feel more refreshed and ready to go.

Haha, it’s honestly not as bad as you think, the maple syrup makes it sweet.
Do it just for one day and see how you feel ;)

  3. Awesome Diggy! I already gave up caffeine a few months ago but I want to try all the other 4 points.

I want to try that lemon thing but maybe just for one day because I’m so skinny that I think I could die without eating for a week :D

Anyway I will try all of these and document it on my blog (with credits of course). Stumbled!

    Hey Diggy,

While I am having a ton of trouble with my caffeine addiction, waking up at the same time each day is something I can really relate to here. I’ve been doing this for the last month or so and it’s made a massive difference in my productivity, and just my over all feeling about the day. Great post!

Luckily I never got into drinking coffee so I have no addiction to caffeine. Try and reduce your consumption and it should make a difference in your energy after a while. :)

  5. I have been drinking half a liter of water upon waking for a few years now. I read about it first on MattFurey.com. It works great.

Some people may find on a juice cleansing diet that relying on citrus fruit juices such as lemons and oranges can cause you to detox too fast making one feel uncomfortable. If this is the case for you, you can also use apple juice and other juices to slow down the detoxing a bit.

It’s an amazing little trick isn’t it :)
Drinking water first thing when you wake up.

Thanks for the advice on using other juices too :)

  6. Colin Wright says:

I’m going to have to start drinking more water in the morning, it would seem :)

All great pieces of advice, though I worry a bit about the Master Cleanse…I’ve read and heard a lot of very disconcerting information about this diet (essentially why it’s not really very healthy for you, just a trend like any other ‘bestseller’ diet, etc) from sources that I trust, so I think I’ll leave that one out.

I’m actually in the process of getting myself back into a regular wake up schedule, though, so I’ll let you know how that turns out!

Thanks for stopping by. For everything there are for and against arguments for everything, but I personally cannot see the negative of cleasing the system. :)

I’ll do some more research, I always like having the facts!

      Cheers! :)

  7. Great stuff Diggy! I used to do the water in the morning along with getting up at the same time but I fell out of the habit due to sickness a few weeks ago. Need to get back on track, thanks for the reminder.

I’ve heard good things about the master cleanse but have not tried it myself. You make it sound so easy I just may have to give it a shot now.

  8. Lisis says:

Water in the morning, huh?… I can’t imagine that being appetizing. I always want something warm and comforting in the morning (ie: coffee). Do you think tea would be a suitable substitute for water since, after all, it’s mostly water?

I think I’ll try the lemony cleanse, but I’m going to wait until I’m living in Vermont, where Maple Syrup might actually be affordable (since a good bit of it is “born” there).

What’s the ratio? One lemon, one glass, one tablespoon of syrup? Or does it matter?

    I’m intrigued… :)

      Heya Lisis!!

You’ll be amazed at how refreshing it is. Maybe it takes some getting used to, but you will love it after a while and the effects of it.

Yeah, maple syrup over here is super expensive, it’ll be way cheaper your side of the world.

I can’t remember the exact recipe, Ill look it up and mail it to you:)

      Thanks for stopping by :)

  9. Jeff says:

I drink the water everyday. I used to drink Soda’s, then was stuck in diet soda’s for a long time. Finally a friend explained how bad they are for you and that helped me move to water. Your right about it. It is a huge boost to get that water in early. Not sure about the lemon thing though. I might have to try it.

Glad you went off the soda’s to water, I just drank coke Zero the whole weekend, and feel kinda bad about that. hehe, normally its only water, fresh fruit juices or organic green tea for me :)

      Thanks for stopping by!
      Cheers :)

Aww Diggy this came at the perfect time, literally! I am lying in bed with the laptop on my belly and was just thinking how I’m always so tired. I think the sleeping pattern is the most important, mine has been irregular this week so the lack of sleep has hit me hard! I’ve been sleeping at 6/7am all week! Horrible :P

Great tips as usual, Diggy :D

    • Diggy - UpgradeReality.com says:

      Heya Renee :)

Glad you enjoyed it! You bad girl, going to bed at 6am. Haha, Im guilty of the same, fri night didnt sleep till 7am the next morning, then 3 hours sleep and did fun things all day. Sometimes lseep seems like a waste :)

      Thanks for stopping by ;)

  15. Karen says:

    Hey Diggy,

Great suggestions… I try and follow the water one as much as possible. The others I need to get on track with more, except getting up and dancing. I don’t know if I’m that much of a morning person. Or ever will be!! :)

    Great post Diggy!
Will have to look into the lemon idea some more though ;)

It reminds me of when I was waking up at 6am for school a while back when experimenting with sleeping rhythm and such. There’s a great post over at TheLifeExperimenter with some more tips:

    http://thelifeexperimenter.com/2009/03/09/life-experiment-11-practice-waking-up-for-bootcamp/

    • Diggy - UpgradeReality.com says:

      Heya Jonas!
Hah, I don’t like waking up at 6am, did that for school for 12 years of my life. Now I wake up at 7.30, still early but a lot more acceptable :)

      Thanks for stopping by! :)

  17. I am not much of a morning person. That is one of those things that sounds good in theory. :-)

Living in Japan has really awaken me to the benefits of eating healthy quality food. My wife eats almost zero fat and meat and I try to keep up.

When I indulge in some meat, excessive cheese or rich foods, I really feel terrible for a couple of days.

When you always eat crappy food, you never have the chance to feel healthy and energetic. It is only when you eat healthy regularly that you can see the damage that junk food does to your health and feelings.

    • Diggy - UpgradeReality.com says:

      Heya John!! :)

Japan is like my favourite dream country, I’m fascinated by it, yet don’t know much about it. I know it’s one of the most expensive cities in the world, so it is on my list to visit, but only once I have enough $$$ :)

It’s so true, junk food and takeout are really bad for society and health, and we should strive to eat fruits, vegetables, fish and chicken, no processed foods.

Every once in a while it is nice to induldge:)

      Thanks for stopping by!!
